Our job lists are divided by job categories/functions. Many of the positions represent ongoing talent searches from our contracted clients, so it may seem that the job itself is there every week. It is not because no one wants that particular position, it is because our client is always looking to add good people like you.
Pay rates are REAL, not inflated and not listed as a “SKILL LEVEL” where the listed $ range from another NE Ohio-area temp firm has nothing to do at all with what you will be paid. That temp firm is simply trying to get you to call them or stop into their office before you call anyone else. For those people, that ruse has worked for years on folks who are not as sharp as you are.
Our published pay rates/ salaries represent a sliding range, top of the pay range or actual starting pay given to us by our hiring client. We don’t make them up. Sometimes a person will get hired at more than the published rate due to their outstanding credentials, ability to interview well and a terrific attitude. MOST of our positions are Interim To Direct Hire: For a set amount of time (in hours, not in days, so that if you work OT that counts toward your required hours) you will be on the Champion payroll while you and the contracted company check each other out for “fit”. When all the signs look good and you have finished your time on our payroll the company (and you) have the option to “Go Direct Hire”…on that company’s payroll as what is commonly called a “direct hire employee” (or also ill-defined: “Permanent”). You will no longer be a “Champion Employee”. At that time it is common to receive a raise in pay by the hiring company and also be eligible for their benefits according to their waiting period. Why the pay raise? Why don’t they pay that extra money to you that during the interim period?
Beyond “it’s tradition” and beyond the “prove yourself” that is on both sides of the equation for Interim To Direct Hire, the agency has to bill the client more than we pay you. We are the actual employer and need to pay taxes, workers’ compensation, social security, holiday costs, safety rewards, referral rewards, unemployment insurance (you don’t pay unemployment insurance, the employer does. Most people don’t know that), certain liability and business insurances, we need to pay your managers and our staff, the cost of advertising and the cost of money we use to pay you before the client pays us, and then the costs of covering for people who don’t keep their end of the employment bargain, attorneys to go after the people who commit fraud and fake injuries, and then there is payroll tax and more payroll taxes and county taxes, sales taxes, and city taxes. Oh, I forgot…rent and phones and water and internet and accounting fees, other legal fees, electricity, gas, heat, trash pickup and snow plowing. Did I forget the cost of our staff that does the actual payroll and the costs associated with banking?
All of that is what constitutes the “cost of doing business”. We need to cover that, and the employer…not you, pays for it. If you have thought “but I do THE work”…you are correct. You do your share, we do ours. It isn’t going to change.
Remember, your pay is NOT reduced to pay our costs, the employer will also pay a new direct hire hourly person less than existing employees. The employer has to do training and also has other costs (as we do) in employing new people.
Here is another fact: our hiring clients dictate how much they are willing to pay a person doing a certain job. WE DO NOT. That pay has to ‘fit into’ what everyone else is being paid at that company. Try as we may to get you more money, sometimes we just can’t.
If you don’t like it, there is something you CAN do about it: Acquire more skills, work your fingers to the bone and you WILL get a higher paying job. You see…you need to become MORE, not less, valuable to a company. Companies pay you according to what value you have to them in the grand scheme of their business, not based on YOUR financial need.
“Interim” assignments are what many people call “Temporary”. There typically is NOT a chance in becoming a direct-hire employee. Many of our Interim Openings are for Maternity leaves, medical leaves, Peak Work Loads (the company has more work for a period of time than their own staff can handle), and fill-ins. Champion does have clients who have ONLY Interim opportunities due to their own Union Labor Contracts (the unions have dictated to a company how long a person can be an Interim worker at their location) or their need to be totally flexible in staffing according to the orders they get from THEIR customers. Not fair? That’s life. And we are on your side.
Direct Hire: You are immediately on the hiring company’s employee payroll and are eligible for their benefits at their proscribed time. MOST of the time this method of entering into a company is for salaried, white-collar and skilled employees. Again, Champion does NOT decide, the hiring company does. But it does happen for Champion candidates in positions of Technicians, Machine Operators, Maintenance Techs, Quality Control, Office, Administration, Financial and “professional level personnel” and first line supervisors.
Champion will ALWAYS let you know how the hiring is done for any position: Interim, Interim to Direct, Direct Hire/and/or how other people have become “permanent” (Direct Hire) employees of our clients. Remember, these are HIRING METHODS and have NOTHING to do with how good a person you are. (we know you are good!)
What To Expect as a Champion Employee:
1) You will be treated with Respect and will be told the truth. Do the same with us and we’ll get along great.
2) Champion will attempt to place you in the best job we have with the best company we have, matched to your skills, abilities, background and attitude.
3) We will pay you as much as we can, commensurate with your job match, and will give you every opportunity to earn more.
4) If you mess up, be straight with us, and we’ll be straight with you.
5) Champion has and must function by certain rules that at times will seem less than flexible. We will explain those rules and be as flexible as our company and client can be.
