UPDATE on Fred. His co-workers did indeed bring the issue to the table. Now, it's up to Fred to respect himself. I'm sure the bully "ain't" done yet! But hopefully, next time..Fred will have found his voice. And if it happens one more time...STRIKE THREE...you're otta here Jackass! Who ever said social media was a waste of time... look what we've all done here and believe me..I sort of accidently on purpose leaked it out that there was a blog post here about them...thank you all! Lizzie, your kid is next! Feel free to write me privately. We can make it happen here!

You said the magic word there Lizzie...JOB. Like Fred his fear of loosing his job kept him from selfdefense. Fortunately I have faith in humanity and believe that co-workers will come to the aid of their colleague. In my daughters case and I suspect many of the co-workers are deeply affected with a sense of nausea. There are many victims when a bully takes the stage some more obvious than others but many none the less. As a mother myself I can totally understand your helpless state of being. It's an awful place to be...but you could have the same kind of faith that I have with the humanness of people especially co-workers. We can only hope that they will nudge the victim to defend themself or just do it for him! A bully hates confrontation especially in public. Thoughts are with you and your child. Thank you for your comment and do let me know how things are going every now and then! Barbara

I do believe that the family of the victim has a duty and a right to confront the bully. Unfortunately, soemtimes that is not an option. When the victim does not want interference for fear of job loss, what is a mother to do. You think that you have raised your children to be strong and not to be a doormat, but sometimes the bully is to overwhelming.

I think you hit the nail on the head here when you said "it is one's obligation to themselves and those who love them to stand up for yourself .." No one should permit anything less than respectfulness coming their way. EVER! Thank you for your comment.

I think the most important thing to remember when dealing with anyone...DO UNTO OTHERS...wait I take that back...DO BETTER UNTO OTHERS. People need to learn that they do not have any right to act other than kind, compassionate and considerate to another human being. That being said, it never says anywhere that in being a good person we have to be "victims". It is one's obligation to themselves and those who love them to stand up for yourself...in the same respectful yet considerate way.

I agree David. My first question (because I am a Safety Director here) was....was the carpet a hazard? Answer: no it just was not centered perfectly in front of the counter. And I also don't believe the manager in charge was present at the time which brings to the table another aspect that could be looked at...heresay. If the employee or co-workers took this to the manager in charge and without witnessing the situation directly are they obligated to intervene? I am not speaking morally, I am speaking employment law and providing a safe working environment free of workplace violence however one defines that. I think the coward knows who is in charge and takes full advantage of the situation. Unfortunately the coward chooses Fred to play his bully games ...notice he didn't mess with my daughter - hehehe he probably knows better~!

I can only assume that the customer was making a scene about the carpet. The manager in charge should have interceded. First, if the carpet was a safety hazard, he/she should have been on top of the problem. Secondly, the manager would have "thanked" the customer for alerting the staff. If the customer remained beligerent, the manager should have invited him to leave. It's a coffee shop. No one customer can guarantee success, but one awful customer can ruin the experience for both the customers and the employees.

1) The employer should definitely be brought into it. There is no excuse to tolerate the abuse of an employee.

2) Karma is a bitch. Jackass will get his comeuppance one day.

Wow. It's hard to believe that people would really do and say those things in an interview.

But then, I remember an interview when I asked about how the person handled situations that involved difficult people and the person I was interviewing took that opportunity to tell me in no uncertain terms how they told that difficult person off!

And I remember a time when someone walked into my office, thru their keys on my desk and sat down asking, "So, what do you want to know about me?" I felt like saying, "Well, that just about says it all."

(This message is a duplicate of one sent on this past weekend. I could not find a copy in my sent file so I am re-sending it.)

G'day! Let's talk.

I am a candidate for the human resource manager position in Norton that was advertised in the Cleveland Plain Dealer this past week. I have had a very non-traditional career path that has given me unusual opportunities to connect human resources (paid and volunteer) with the mission of the organizations for which I worked: non-profits and a private school. The development of employee handbooks and the administration of company/school employee policies were within my purview.

In various locations, I was responsible for multiple locations: personnel (full-time and permanent, seasonal, and also part-time and permanent), program, maintenance, etc., etc. I usually did my own day to day scheduling of projects, appointments, and phone calls.. As principal of a small Christian day school, I drove the accumulated efforts of staff, parents, and other volunteers in the effort to achieve dual accreditation from both secular and church-based accrediting agencies. End of story: We succeeded!

Written and oral communications are almost of a second nature to me. I am an experienced public speaker, having delivered literally hundreds of formal public presentations and a myriad of less formal talks with community leaders. I frequently was the editor or copy editor of organizational publications (newletters, annual reports, and the like). I directed major fund-raisers and shows and led the staffs of multi-camp Scout reservations.

I have a portfolio of reference letters from my years as the principal at Redeemer Lutheran School which I would be glad to share with you, complementing my resume'.

I also have a passport that is current and ready for travel. So let's talk!

My contact numbers are (H) 330.682.9069 and (C) 330.466.9846.

It's hard to remember how to interview even when you have been employed recently. If you have been with a company for a long time and get laid off or the company closes that can be really hard too. The company you worked for probably felt more like family or close friends. You get comfortable. You will get rusty on your "first impression" skills. Also you will be down from losing what might have been in your eyes, the company that you would retire from. Think positive..be confident and well prepared (mentally & physically). Also don't forget those directions. If possible take a test drive the night before just to be sure you know where you are going. Being a little early is a great bonus to your first impression. It shows you are serious about the job and understand that their time is important too.

It is so important to have a plan! You want to make sure you have the right person by making sure your goals and their goals are the same. If they are looking for a quick advance in the company and that isn't the type of position you are offering at the time, that would cause a problem down the line and the whole process would have to repeat shortly after because neither you nor your employee are happy. If the money isn't right that will also cause issues. Money isn't what it was a year ago, two years ago, but you still need to be competitive enough to keep them interested in the job and not looking elsewhere. Everyone is looking for more these days but most people are realistic about wages and you need to be too. Great article!
